Sweet Treats Await in WG+E Shovel Hunt

Westfield Gas + Electric is once again turning an important safety message into a community-wide treasure hunt!

Our Shovels for Scoops promotion is back, and miniature shovels will be hidden throughout Westfield all summer long. Each shovel carries a simple reminder to contact 811 before digging. Anyone who finds a shovel can redeem it for a free small ice cream at one of three participating local favorites…Northside Creamery, Mr. Whipy’s Golf Acres, or Mrs. C’s Soft Serve.

While the reward may be sweet, the message behind the campaign is serious.

Many homeowners don’t realize that common outdoor projects, such as planting trees, installing fences, building decks, or setting mailbox posts can put them at risk of striking underground utility lines. A damaged gas, electric, communications, or water line can lead to service disruptions, costly repairs, fines, injuries, and even loss of life.

“People often assume 811 is only for contractors or large construction projects, but that’s simply not the case,” said Greg Freeman, WG+E Gas Operations Superintendent.

Even small landscaping projects involve digging, and any digging has the potential to impact underground utilities. Because these utilities are out of sight, it’s easy to forget they’re there until a shovel, post-hole digger, or excavator accidentally strikes one.”

Massachusetts law requires everyone who digs to contact 811 before starting an excavation project. This free service notifies utility companies of planned digging so underground lines and facilities can be marked with paint or flags. After the required 72-hour waiting period, homeowners can move forward with their projects knowing they’ve taken an important step to help protect themselves, their property, and essential underground infrastructure.

Now, are you ready for that sweet treat? Follow WG+E on Facebook, Instagram, and X all summer long for clues leading to hidden shovels throughout the community. Keep an eye out wherever you go – some shovels will pop up when you least expect them!

If you find one, grab it and redeem it for a free scoop of ice cream. It’s a fun reward with an important reminder: always contact 811 before you dig.
