Controls Electrician

The Westfield Gas and Electric is looking to hire a full time Controls Electrician. ($47.51 min.)

This job description encompasses four (4) main areas of responsibility. They are the Westfield Gas + Electric Light Department’s communications, traffic lights, electrical substation/distribution systems, and physical electrical plant.

In general, all installation, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, record keeping and general needs of each will be the responsibility of the Controls Electrician, as well as any backup duties listed within the collective bargaining agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

Communications:

· All installation and maintenance of communication lines within the Department’s system, including remote locations such as Fiber facilities outside of Westfield.

· Perform electrical or other maintenance work within fiber huts provided it is less than 480V.

· Know and understand all concepts needed for installation, repair and troubleshooting two-way communication systems and radios.

· Inspection and maintenance of such equipment shall conform to FCC standards (and any other applicable standards).

· Installation, maintenance and repair of all video equipment including cameras, monitors, cable amplifiers and cable.

· Responsible for development, installation, and maintenance of all security systems associated with the Department.

· Maintenance, programming, installation, and repair pertaining to hardware and components of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System.

· Maintenance of Electrical Substation and Distribution system components including protective relay control systems, Data Acquisition Systems, medium-voltage circuit breakers and transformers.

· Understand local area and wide area networking concepts.

· Basic understanding of (MUX’s) multiplexer and assist in installation, repair and trouble shooting.

· Performs skilled work in aerial, within a bucket truck for the purpose of installation, maintenance and repair of communications equipment.

Traffic Lights:

· Install, maintain and repair any traffic controls under city jurisdiction including electromechanical and electronic controls.

· The procurement for all components of traffic lights, mechanical and/or electrical.

Substation/Distribution Equipment:

· Know and understand basic control and protection relaying for the purpose of test, calibration, and repair.

· Know and understand sectionalizing and reclosing control equipment related to an electric distribution system for the purpose of installation and repair.

· Install, test, repair, remove and replace distribution equipment such as revenue (PT and CT) and power quality metering.

WGE Physical/Commercial Property and Buildings other than overhead/underground system:

· Inspecting electrical systems, identifying hazards, implementing maintenance programs, and repairing complex electrical equipment

· Must comply with safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and the National Electrical Code

· Designing and installing new control circuits

· Designing and installing new electric distribution and load centers up to 480V

Qualifications and Entrance Requirements

· Working knowledge of all the above.

· Three (3) years’ experience in the industrial / utility controls experience related to electric substation relaying, metering, and the skills to calibrate and test said devices.

· Knowledge of a SONET system, related to installation and repair.

· Knowledge and principles of traffic light systems for the purpose of maintenance and repair.

· Ability to express concepts and information verbally, and in written form.

· Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License.

· Must hold an MA electrician license.

· Successful applicants must not be color blind or have a fear of heights.

· Capable of single phase or three phase electric meter installations including current transformer & potential transformer meter configurations.
