Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

· Installs, repairs, purges, tests, and maintains high, intermediate and utilization pressure mains and services. Also, read, follow, understand and update any records of work performed.

· Detects and repairs gas leaks; application of cathodic protection; gas meter installation and testing and other duties associated with maintenance and construction of a gas distribution system.

· Performs pipefitting, meter and regulator work, and station maintenance duties.

· Must perform plastic and steel pipe installations and connections.

· Performs trenchless techniques related to pipe installation by means of directional rod pushers, moles, and directional boring machine.

· Installation of plastic pipe, including joining, squeezing off, saddle, and valve installation.

· Utility Dig Safe locating procedures and reporting.

· Any associated distribution construction, maintenance or operations work.

· Applications of cathodic protection measures such as kero-test and hot line insulators, impressed current anode bank installations as well as common anode, test stations, bonding and insulation procedures.

· Performs District Regulator Station installation, as well as maintenance of pressure limiting and relief devices.

· Will perform all needed telemetering interpretations, monitoring and repairs as needed.

· Will perform all needed gas division inspections related to field distribution and gate station facilities.

· This position is a safety sensitive position, therefore it is subject to random drug testing per DOT guidelines.

· Responds to any emergency conditions within or outside normal work hours.

· May work with other divisions of the Department as needed.

· All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Entrance Requirements include, but not limited to:

· One-year practical field experience in gas operations and maintenance required, additional experience preferred.

· Knowledge of pipeline construction practices and methods.

· Knowledge and ability to use tools and equipment used in gas distribution work.

· Knowledge of gas leak detection methods and leak repair.

· Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

· Ability to read, understand and follow detailed operations and maintenance procedures.

· To have or be able to obtain within six months a Class B CDL, a Hoisting Engineers License with a minimum backhoe operating coding availability and any associated DTE required training.

· Must be or have been qualified under an “Operator Qualifications” initiative.

· Must have knowledge of equipment procedures and methods used in pressurized tie-in work, including “Mueller” hot taps, high and intermediate stopping, and branch connections.

· Must have knowledge of procedures and techniques applied to holiday surveys, jeeping equipment, thinsulators, intra-wall bends, pipe rollers, boring equipment, CGI’s and general gas leak detection equipment.

· Knowledge and techniques needed for repair of high, intermediate, and low-pressure gas pipe within the range of materials used in gas distribution (cast iron, steel and plastic pipe).

· Knowledge of purging methods and materials, pressure test requirements, and facility abandonment procedures.

· Knowledge needed for the application of Cathodic Protection measure related Kero-test, hot line insulators, impressed current anode banks, anodes, test stations, and bonding and insulating procedures.

· Knowledge of laws and regulations related to 220CMR113, and DOT Pipeline Safety Regulations Part 190 through 195.

Exertional Requirements:

· Ability to frequently lift 50 lbs. and carry 50 lbs. unrestricted while walking and standing.

· Must be able to tolerate cold and hot temperatures as well as high humidity.

· Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, and gases.

· Must be able to tolerate extended hours during emergency conditions

· Must not be color-blind.

· Ability to reach above shoulder level.

· Ability to use a shovel for the purpose of digging, possibly for extended periods of time.

· Ability to use bang bar or other necessary equipment during leakage detection surveys.

· Ability to work in confined spaces for extended periods of time.

· Must have the ability to work around moving machinery and operate motor vehicles appropriate to the job.

· Ability to perform shift work and be available for regular “on-call” assignments.
