In light of the recent heartbreaking loss of a Massachusetts family due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning over the holidays, Westfield Gas + Electric (WG+E) is reminding residents about the importance of CO safety in their homes and businesses.
“Carbon monoxide is something we can’t see or smell, but it’s a serious danger,” said Tom Flaherty, General Manager of Westfield Gas + Electric. “This tragedy reminds us how critical it is to take simple steps like maintaining your heating system and regularly testing your carbon monoxide detectors to keep your home safe.”
Especially now that we are in the colder months, there is an increased risk associated with CO, which can build up quickly in enclosed spaces. WG+E recommends the following measures to protect against CO exposure:
- Have a battery-operated CO detector on each level of your home, outside bedrooms, at the top of open stairs and at the base of cellar stairs.
- Test them monthly and change the batteries when you change your clocks. A “chirping” sound indicates that it’s time to change the batteries or to change out the unit with a new CO detector.
- Have your oil or gas-burning furnace inspected yearly by a licensed technician to ensure they are functioning safely and efficiently.
- Use portable generators outside only. Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows, keeping all doors and windows closed.
- Never run a car inside a garage that is attached to a house, even with the garage door open.
Carbon Monoxide safety is important and should be practiced year-round. If your detector sounds an alarm, do not assume it is defective. If you suspect poisoning, get fresh air immediately and call for help, either to WG+E Emergency Dispatch at 413-572-0000, or 911. For more information, visit our Carbon Monoxide Safety page.
